Vacation in Liguria

Liguria outdoor mountain rambling, trekking and horse-riding; numerous excursions of varying degrees of difficulty and length on the slopes of the Ligurian Alps. It will take open-air sports enthusiasts through tiny hamlets now mostly deserted to alpine pastures used for generations for transhumance.

Still today, the ancient transhumant paths connect the villages of the upper Arroscia Valley (Cosio, Mendatica, Montegrosso Pian Latte and Pornassio) with the pastures and, higher up, the mountain passes. Ideal in all seasons, these outings and treks that explore nature are an astonishing blend – in a very small space – of mountain and Mediterranean. The same paths travelled in the good season on foot or horseback are in winter transformed for ski mountaineering. The mule tracks of the valley bottom provide an opportunity to make delightful hill excursions in all seasons. Of particular interest for ramblers is the Rezzo Valley with its immense beech forest and the presence of many traces of the past.

A circuit for the sightless: close to San Bernardo di Mendatica, at approximately 1300 m asl, there is a facilitated circuit equipped for the sightless with tactile signalling on nylon cords and signs in Braille.

Mountain biking and parascending – The choice is wide and will satisfy the most demanding cyclists: hundreds of kilometres of road and mule tracks offer everyone the chance to cycle through green vegetation. Above the 2000 m of Mounts Fronte, Saccarello and Bertrand, the routes are more difficult. At Mendatica people circle in the air, parascending. With a two-person paraglider and guided by expert instructors, the splendid valley backdrop, viewed from on high, is within everyone’s grasp. Monesi: skiing but a stone’s throw from the sea – The Monesi ski amenities and the ski runs on Monte Saccarello at between 1400 and 2200 m asl make the nearby mountain villages (Cosio, Mendatica, Montegrosso Pian Latte, Pornassio) ideal for winter tourism despite being only a few kilometres from the sea. The spectacle is particularly beautiful in spring, when temperatures rise and the Monesi snow becomes compact, permitting on and off piste skiing.

A morning can be spent on skis before a fast and easy return to the coast for an afternoon of beach sunshine. Enthusiasts of ski mountaineering will not be disappointed by the uncontaminated routes of Navette (starting from Valcona, the characteristic pastures of Mendatica) or at Case Fascei on the slopes of Monte Mimega, above Montegrosso Pian Latte.

Kayaks and rafting – The Arroscia river, especially when swollen, offers enjoyable and daredevil descents in kayak. Most of all the narrow gorges above Pieve di Teco provide thrills worthy of great rivers in the stretch (four kilometres) between the Montegrosso Pian Latte and Ponti di Pornassio fork and in the stretch (approx. five kilometres) between Ponti di Pornassio and Pieve di Teco). The Coldinava Academy of the Environment, Tourism and Nature Holidays The Col di Nava Academy is important for all western Liguria.

The environmental education activities (for all Italy’s schools) are flanked by tourist and cultural, holiday, nature and sport initiatives, open to all. Working within the Academy is the “Forte Pozzanghi Stable” where superb Arab and British thoroughbreds can be ridden in the riding-school’s paddocks or along the numerous surrounding paths.
